Esperanza Gene
Crisis & Change Strategist
Esperanza Gene is using her background as a Community Organizer, Nonprofit Leader, and Social Science Researcher to help people and organizations confront times of change with the sharpest strategy possible. She received her B.A. in Theology and B.A. in English-professional writing from Oakwood University. Her theological studies were always focused on real world problems, identifying beliefs that add to social harm, and contributing thought that prioritizes marginalized people. She worked with students in the juvenile system as an Education Advocate, lead community groups, and later worked consulting church leaders on the social health of their congregations. All this shaped a focus towards social sciences for activist purposes, which lead her to study for an M.A. in Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. There she was formally trained as a community organizer and began private research on social change theory as it relates to systemic racism. She became active on campus and the broader community. On campus she even lead a movement confronting Fuller's racist practices & norms, which lead to consulting the administration on organizational development changes. Along the way she realized a pattern of consistently being a go-to person amidst crisis and big change. While continuing her research she worked in multiple nonprofits whose causes she believed could change the world. It taught her how overloaded many organizations are and that a specialist position is needed to guide effective expansion and weather the unexpected. Esperanza Gene believes change, whether from crisis or expansion, requires agility, awareness of how every detail shapes the whole, and a sincere connection to people. From experience, she knows emotions have to be tended to as shrewdly as the data points must be analyzed. A beautiful plan with no buy in from a team is flawed. A grand idea that doesn’t consider people’s capacity fails. Her approach centers human needs without compromising imaginative ambition, but rather integrating them. The most exciting program idea and the hardest tragedy can be navigated while properly supporting the people moving through it. Grounding ideas so they can be sustainable long term is an investment to successfully do more good in the world. A crisis shouldn’t be approached like a cold calculation. It calls for an anchor with warmth as much as foresight. These are things she’s learned through a life that’s sharpened her steadiness in a storm and made her want to offer these skills. Has the worst possible suddenly happened? Is your organization having growing pains? Are you a visionary unsure how to transform what you see into reality? Let’s talk. I’ll strategize.
